The miracle of Jesus turning water to wine: Invite, Listen and Do

In John 2:1-11, we read about the first recorded miracle of Jesus turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. While most of us focus on the moment when Jesus turned the water into wine, the miracle actually began much earlier.

The SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD broke down this miracle into three essential steps, which apply not just to this event, but to our own lives as well. These steps are: Inviting, Listening, and Obeying.

The beginning of the miracle wasn’t when JESUS turned the water into wine in verse 7-8; the miracle started from verse 2, when JESUS was invited to the wedding in the first place.

Invite

John‬ ‭2‬:‭2‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.”

The presence of Jesus is essential. Without His presence at the wedding, there would have been no miracle in the first place. This principle applies to our lives as well: we must first invite Jesus into our hearts, our situations, and our struggles. Often, we try to handle things on our own, but the true beginning of transformation happens when we invite Jesus in and give Him room to work.

Give him room to give your worry to HIM and you relax, really Let Go and LET GOD

Revelation‬ ‭3‬:‭20‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”

‭‭

Imagine if JESUS wasn’t at that wedding, what would have happen?

Likewise, when we face difficult situations in our lives, inviting Jesus to take control is the first step to experiencing a miracle.

Often, we might feel overwhelmed or helpless, but we forget the power that is unleashed when we simply invite Jesus in. inviting Jesus to take control is the first step to experiencing a miracle.

When we surrender our worries and give Him room, we can truly “Let go and let God.”

Imagine how different the outcome of the wedding would have been if Jesus had not been there! The same applies to our lives—His presence truly truly changes everything.

The miracle begins with inviting Jesus into your heart, situation, it continues with you Listening to HIM.

Listen

John‬ ‭2‬:‭5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.””

Yes You can Jesus in your life, your home, your boat but are you actually listening to HIM?

Once we invite Jesus in, we must be ready to listen. In verse 5, Mary points the servants to Jesus, saying to listen to HIM.

It’s possible to have Jesus in your life but still miss what He’s saying. Are you listening to Him? Just as the servants had to listen to Jesus’ instructions, we must also quiet the noise in our lives—our fears, worries, and doubts—and tune in to His voice.

Jesus speaks to those who are willing to listen. Whether He is giving us peace, instruction, or a word of encouragement, hearing His voice is key to walking in His will and experiencing His miracles.

John‬ ‭10‬:‭27‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”

John‬ ‭10‬:‭28‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.”

Listening to Jesus opens the door to a deeper relationship with Him. It’s about more than just hearing—it’s about creating space for Him to lead, guide, and transform us. A good example is the story of Martha and Mary in Luke 10:38-42. Martha was busy and distracted, but Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened. Martha had Jesus in her home, but she missed the chance to hear Him.

Luke‬ ‭10‬:‭38‬-‭42‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.””

‭‭

We can easily get caught up in the busyness of life and miss what Jesus is saying. Sometimes we let the noise of fear, worry, doubt, obligations, quiet the still small voice of GOD. But when we truly listen, we open ourselves to His wisdom and guidance.

Why should we Listen?

Because JESUS wants Koinonia, fellowship with us, HE wants to lead us, instruct us, guide us, direct us, talk with us, and we need to be still, stop toiling, and Listen

So when I give room to listen, what next?

The miracle was completed with them Obeying; so you DO, you Obey.

Do

John‬ ‭2‬:‭7‬-‭8‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it.”

The final step in the miracle process is obedience. The servants listened to Jesus’ instruction to fill the waterpots, and because of their obedience, they shared in the joy of the miracle. As you noted, the servants didn't perform the miracle—Jesus did. But their willingness to obey was crucial in bringing the miracle to completion.

Often, God asks us to take simple steps of faith that might seem ordinary or even illogical—like filling waterpots with water when wine is needed. But it’s in these moments of obedience that God works.

Sometimes it might take someone even pointing us to JESUS like Mary, the mother of JESUS had to, and that’s fine, that’s the beauty of having godly relationship around you, but when they do, you listen and obey.

I like how the Bible says that the servants filled up the water lots to the brim, to the fullest; So also when we obey we obey “up to the brim”—giving our full trust, love, and service to Jesus.

You have kept the good until now

John‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

“And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!””

At the wedding, the guests didn’t realize the best wine had been saved for last. This tells us that with GOD, the best is always yet to come. Even when we face difficulties like running out of wine at a celebration, JESUS has the power to turn lack into abundance.

The miracle started with inviting Jesus, then listening to HIM and obeying HIM; and when they did all three, they had the best ever.

They had JESUS with them, they were in a bad situation, they ran out of wine, they didn’t know what to do?

Are we in a similar situation? Invite Jesus into your life, heart that situation, surrender it all to him, give him room to help, Listen and Obey as HE leads instructs and guides.

In our own lives, we may face moments of uncertainty, frustration, or lack. But are we inviting Jesus into those situations? Are we listening to His voice? Are we obeying what He says, even when it doesn’t make sense? When we follow these steps—Invite, Listen, Obey—we give Jesus room to bring His best into our lives.

No matter where we are today, the principle remains: with Jesus, the best is yet to come.

The instruction can be to rest, cast the net to the right, like Mary said, listen and whatever JESUS ask you to do, do it.

Prayer

Just go ahead and really thank God for it all, your life, HIS mercy, grace and favour.

I go ahead and invite HIM into every situations in your life especially the situations you are in right now, surrender all to HIM, tell HIM you give him full control of that situation and ask that HE speaks to you, minister to you in that situation on what to do, and ask for grace to hear HIM, see HIM, feel HIM and ask for grace to obey HIM; whatever HE says; ask for grace and strength to obey.
